Red Pen

Instant Grading App for Android

Using technology to make teaching about teaching.

DETAILS

About This Project

This android application makes it faster and easier for teachers to grade student work. It uses Computer Vision to analyze pictures of tests and then grade them according to an answer key. The project was funded through Sorelle Friedler PhD by Haverford College and the National Science Foundation.

THE GOAL

Teachers have a difficult enough job without the paperwork. We aimed to automate the tedious parts of teaching in order to allow teachers to spend their time teaching.

THE RESULT

The Red Pen app is published and available on the Google Play store. The product allows teachers to grade and manage tests from multiple classes.

THE IDEA

Automated grading has been around for a long time. However, with modern computer vision the idea can be expanded and improved using things like OCR and advanced template matching.

THE SKILLS

This project was an in-depth foray into Android and OpenCV. My colleague and I wrote over 8000 lines of clean, concise, commented code in ~400 hours.
